How to copy optical discs (CD, DVD or Blu-Ray) in Windows | Digital Citizen
Images are created by software that writes every bit of information contained on a CD or DVD into a file on your computer. This file can then be made available for download so that other people can make an exact duplicate or your original CD or DVD on their own computer. Now do not think that you can simply go out and buy a CD and then create a image of it for your friends to download and write to a CD. Most commercial CDs these days have a copy protection on them that makes it difficult or next to impossible to duplicate. There are, though, certain CDs that you are allowed to freely distribute to friends. For example, almost all Linux distributions are available by download as a type cd image known as an ISO. Once you download the ISO image you can then burn that image onto a blank CD and boot your computer from it.
On most Linux distributions, this will already be installed and available from the system menus. If it is not, use the distribution's package manager to install the K3b package - for instance, on Mageia, you could go to the Mageia Control Center, click on "Look at installable software and install software packages", search for k3b and install it, or run urpmi k3b as root in a console. A dialog box will open. In the 'Image to Burn' area, click on the folder icon, and the file chooser will open.
Creating and storing ISO backups of your important software installation discs, and even operating system setup discs, is a smart plan. Complement that with an unlimited online backup service and you have a near bulletproof disc backup strategy. ISO images are great because they're self-contained, perfect representations of the data on a disc. Being single files, they're easier to store and organize than outright copies of the folders and files on a disc would be. Windows doesn't have a built-in way of creating ISO image files, so you'll need to download a program to do it for you.
