The Computer Science Doctoral Program begins with research and breadth components. The research component helps students place an early focus on research. Students must complete an "Introduction to Graduate Studies" course CS and then take at least three credit hours of directed research study CS under faculty guidance each semester until their qualifying examination. The breadth component is intended to facilitate students' learning about a variety of areas within computing, as well as core computer science areas. Students must take at least twelve courses from the different areas of study within the College.

Residency Requirement. Doctoral students must spend at least two full-time semesters in residence at the Georgia Institute of Technology and ordinarily must complete research for the dissertation while in residence. Under special circumstances, candidates who have met the residency requirement may receive permission to pursue their research in absentia, provided the chair of the appropriate school approves and a faculty member directs the project. In either case, doctoral students working full time on thesis research should be registered for a full course load of "" dissertation hours each semester.
The central goal of the PhD program is to train students to perform original, independent research. The most important part of the curriculum is the successful defense of a PhD Dissertation, which demonstrates this research ability. The academic requirements are designed in service of this goal. Almost all of the courses in both the core and elective categories are already taught regularly at Georgia Tech.
