He describes the changing of the guard, between secular ideological friction, such as democracy versus communism, to cultural and religious reasoning. Huntington's hypothesis is based heavily on examples of recent struggles between civilizations all over the world. I agree with Huntington's hypothesis because it is evident that since the fall of the "Iron curtain" culture and religion have replaced ideas as the fundamental instigators of conflict.
The Validity of Samuel P. Huntington’s Thesis in “The Clash of Civilizations”
This thesis aims to offer a more methodical examination of this debate, and thereby provides an more dispassionate. Samuel Huntington has made famous his thesis "the clash of civilizations", which was developed in his article in Foreign Affairs in and in the book that followed, in which the author expanded his thesis and reaffirmed the validity of his theory after the success and controversy that followed the publication of his article. Given the interest in, as well as the controversy over and misrepresentation of his article, Huntington decided that the prudent thing to do would be to expand it into a book-length treatment in which he would explore more deeply and document more thoroughly the thesis he propounded in his article.
The clash of civilisations COC thesis was introduced by Samuel P Huntington int he aftermath of the Cold War and his thesis stated that the 21st century world order would be characterised by conflict and tension due to cultural reasons rather than political, ideological or economic. Despite this, there have been many criticisms that have been made of the COC thesis. The main criticism of the COC thesis is that it has been argued that it is too generalising and too often the acts of extremists are used to generalise a whole of a culture. Muslim countries are not necessarily more intolerant than non Muslim countries but the increase in focus on Muslim extremism has allowed the thesis to be recognised as right. Despite this, there are many examples which show that Muslim countries are accepting of western liberal norms of behaviour.
